What Do Tech CEOs Think About Centralisation And Decentralisation?

There’s no way you didn’t notice the crypto wave around you. One smaller wave within it is the idea of creating decentralised apps.

Bitcoin started as a decentralised way of doing transactions and it flourished as the early adopters were fans of privacy and anti-central-authority movements.

But that’s not to say that we’re moving towards a decentralised world. If we are to look at decentralising events through the lens of history, that would mean cherrypicking all the revolutions. It’s not just the revolutions that got us to advance.

There are waves in the history of humanity that either centralise (towards a better purpose) or decentralise (towards a better purpose).

Jim Barksdale of Netscape famously said one time that there are only two ways of making money in technology: bundling or unbundling.

So the tech world has had its fair share of centralised and decentralised events. All these online courses are unbundling the universities, while Netflix bundled multiple shows together. Speaking of the streaming industry, it looks like it’s about to be unbundled soon — at least Disney is looking forward to doing that.

Which one of these two are you building?

About Ch Daniel

I run Chagency_, an experiences design agency that specialises on helping tech CEOs reduce user churn. We believe experiences are not only the reason why users choose not to leave but also what generates word of mouth. We’re building a credo around this belief.
