One Easy Thing To Be Done Every Day By A Tech CEO

There’s this guy called Stephen King. Very prolific writer, over 200 short stories and published over 60 books. Chances are, you’ve heard of him or his books.

There’s also this guy called George RR Martin. He wrote the massively popular series called “Game of Thrones”.

The two of them were having a fireside chat/talk. Towards the end of it, George addresses this question to Stephen:

“How the fuck do you write so many books so fast?”

Stephen’s answer makes a lot of sense. To put it short, he’s imposed himself a daily target of 6 pages. He says that in two months, that’s a book — 360 pages roughly.

6 pages sounds like a target that’s low enough to be attainable daily and high enough so that it can translate into a book in two months. Yes, not everyone is able to do that from day 1 but hey, King’s saying that after creating so much.

Translating That Into What A Tech CEO can do

Getting in touch with the user base seems tremendously hard. So hard that it’s not worth doing, or maybe just once every now and then (i.e. three months). “There’s so many of them and I’ll never be able to reach them all”. The second part of that idea that is never thought is “so I’ll never try”.

Trying to talk to 100 in a day is unattainable, most probably. Trying to publish 60 books in a year could be the same for King. But 6 pages per day? 6 books in a year? Makes sense if you think it like that. And yes, it’s quality over quantity but that target of 6 is not carved in stone. Probably some days it’s 3 and some other days it’s 20.

5 users per day. Let’s have it like that. It’s 5 conversations. Not even conversations, maybe some are not “worth the time”. But doing that for 6 months will surely reveal insight that can save the company — or just help it increase its value delivery exponentially.

5 per day — let’s call it that.
