How To Create A Video Consumption Experience

Powerful experiences are immersive. Here’s a micro-analysis.

They get you hooked, catch most of your attention and take you “hostage” within this realm they create. In a sense, planting you even deeper into the narrative.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s a 3.5″ screen, a TV, a cinema screening or a place as wide as Disneyland — experiences can be created anywhere. As a consequence of that, I often say that they can happen within a B2B environment. Deals are being agreed upon by humans.

YouTube put out video autoplay some time ago. Eventually, Facebook caught up on becoming a video platform. Before this, they anyways got a very deep and engulfing experience. After that, with the video platform available and the tweaking and upgrading that came with time, they got the autoplay function as well.

In fact, they did it better. They created a specific section for video consumption.

And made a dedicated button for that. And made everything look more like TV channels, in a different way than YouTube or a streaming platform like Netflix.

Speaking of dark mode the other day, here it is — an experience focused on viewing. And there’s another thing I’d like to point out, which FB did better than YouTube. I mentioned it earlier: the autoplay function.

The second the video is over, next one pops up with a smooth animation. Towards the end of the video, this discrete message is there:

I think Facebook’s experience is superior overall, while its aim is different than YouTube. This is an example of how two giants are sharing a market — are you doing something to suck your users in what you offer them?
