We’ve learned amongst years of business experience that it’s not just about the value.
It’s not necessarily who has the most useful product. It’s a combination of that and how you get it in front of people.
This is a life-long topic/discussion. I called it the gold and glitter. People may call it “brand” or “marketing” — though sometimes these words are just thrown as excuses. “Oh yeah, that’s branding… we don’t have that but if we would, we’d be rocking” the excuse goes. It’s as if they found another word for “magic that will make my business skyrocket”.
But you’re not one of these people, so I’ve got something to say to you.
The good news
The “software as a service” notion is as if it’s been explained for dummies. I don’t mean any offence to anyone — don’t take it that way.
Here’s why. Business:
- value (gold)
- distribution (glitter)
Depending on industry/market/etc, value means something different. However, in this industry,
- software
- service
The beautiful part? Service, if done properly, becomes distribution — a positive feedback loop.
The reason why I’m saying SaaS is explained for dummies is a way of me saying this:
It’s such a good name, because it reminds us all the time what we should be focusing on. Things are not working anymore? Maybe we should switch our focus from software to service.
See my article from yesterday. I’m basically advocating for more service.
See my foundational article about experiences. I’m looking at Netflix’s “skip intro” button — that’s software
It boils down to these two.
