Will People Talk About Your SaaS Product If It’s Average?

You want your company to do better. And lately growth has been kinda… stagnant?

If you’re profitable, you’re doing something good.

That’s without saying. Some things somewhere in your business are lined up perfectly to produce this positive feedback. Just like our ancestors were thinking the stars are aligned for their good fate, so it is for you.

Here’s something that might be missed in this pursuit of making things better for your company. I like to talk a lot about word of mouth and we all know it’s the holy grail of any business.

If I’d ask you how you’re doing on word of mouth, we’d go into a discussion on a surface level about:

  • how you might have referral systems
  • how you ask for reviews/recommendations personally, once you’ve taken good care of a client
  • maybe you’ve been brave enough to have navigated the waters of “influencer marketing”
  • placed social media share buttons next to your case studies

But let’s blow past that. Let’s get straight into a more profound conversation. Deeper conversations might become uncomfortable as they challenge our core beliefs (at least that’s what I understand by deep conversation).

Let’s talk about the core of your business.

What is it in its core that makes it special? Or distinguishable? Memorable…?

No one likes average. No one talks about the average food they’ve had the other day or maybe the average book they’ve started but never finished.

And look, surely your business is not average since it’s profitable. Is it possible, though, to go deeper under the hood and see what can be changed/implemented so as to make it more interesting? Something quirky?

Some specific reasons to give your people (users) an extra reason to tell their like-minded peers?

I’ll expand on this tomorrow about how I’d tackle the situation.
